Ton Zwerver
Ton Zwerver (1951) is a sculptor, photographer and creates performances. He lives and works in Amsterdam.
Zwerver often uses everyday objects and then incorporates these objects into a sculptural work. He strips the objects of their function or gives them a new one.
In recent works, aptly titled Sculptural Situations, he creates sculptural situations. In these works, his own body forms the blank canvas for colourful, multifarious, absurdist, sometimes creepy, but more often humorous compositions that straddle the line between costume design, sculpture and performance. His video sculptures move, sometimes meditatively, sometimes thrillingly through an object that threatens to fall. Like kinetic sculptures driven not by a mechanism but by the creator’s body.
Zwerver’s situations are reminiscent in form of happenings from the last century: his mobile sculptures are always temporary in nature and come about improvisationally. The temporary sculptures exist by the grace of the video recording and last as long as the video runs. After this, the individual attributes go back into the cabinet, waiting to be taken out at a later time for a new composition.
