The beauty of waste material

The beauty of waste material

Marjolein Knottenbelt

Marjolein Knottenbelt collects objects that speak to her. In each image, she recognises its connection to past relationships, functions and histories, while also sensing its potential for new meanings. She is intrigued by the tension between these two worlds. By placing familiar images in unconventional contexts, she creates a new space — a space where recognition and confusion intertwine, and disorientation leaves room for thought.

The consumption of material goods is increasing at a rapid pace. Worn objects — those that have stood the test of time and proved themselves enduring — are replaced instantly by newer versions. Have we become indifferent to the significance of such objects, rich with sentiment and nostalgic value, that spontaneously evoke a sense of longing?

Knottenbelt feels a growing resistance to producing ever more new work with ever more new materials. Instead, she seeks to reuse what already exists. Neglected objects, teetering on the brink of destruction, seem to call for one final chance. In her practice, the processes of reusing, modifying, retrieving, transforming, converting, readjusting and adapting are always central.
