The beauty of waste material

The beauty of waste material

Maria Gruppelaar

My work is about resilience. It refers to possibilities to create something new from what is old or damaged. Often after loss and setbacks or for lack of anything better. It has to do with construction, recovery, change and the ability to improvise. These processes are visible in my work.

My work is also hybrid and slow. Hybrid because it can pass for both paintings and sculptures, they are ‘sculpture plantings’. The sculpture is somewhere between a two and a three-dimensional form. Slow because the production process is intensive, it takes time. Materials are wood, scraps and demolition waste, often from construction containers. Also cardboard, pieces of old cloth and filling material. Reusing previous work is also part of this: my best work often arises from damaged or otherwise fragments of previous work. I make my own paint from egg yolk and pigments.
