Kees van de Wal
1967 (NL) lives and works in Zaltbommel.
Since his first exhibition in 2008 is his work evolved from abstract landscapes with the theme of stillness into the non-figurative minimalist imagery it is today. After the horizon disappeared from the landscapes, suggestions of clouds and vegetation were further abstracted into independent forms, searching for the right combination of tension and balance. When Kees van de Wal no longer allowed himself to be limited by the edges of the canvas, the first wall objects were a reality.
The objects arise while working, sketches are rarely made and then worked out. The material inspires and from there forms arise that are critically examined for form, color and composition.
The geometric and playful organic forms which van de Wal made in recent years have given way to new work made of cardboard. The cardboard of old boxes has inspired him; the properties of cardboard gave new insights and possibilities. The limitation that van de Wal currently imposes on himself in working with old cardboard and received scraps of paint strengthens his search for the ultimate work. Each work takes on its own character, together they form a tranquil whole.
