Gertruud Dentjens
Lives and works in Utrecht, NL
Gertruud Dentjens works with (building) materials from monumental buildings that have already had a life behind them and bear traces of use, of the ravages of time.
She is fascinated by materials that have lost their effect in constructions. Often these are materials that were not visible, have been hidden and are not immediately noticed.
These materials are taken out of their construction and combined with newly created elements; in this way she makes the invisible visible and writes a new story. In addition, history always has an influence on the image and can therefore be seen.
The collection of the material and the physical way of working, such as printing, casting, stacking and adding are important elements in the creation process.
Gertruud wants to expose the essence of the material and creates images in the purest form, for the wall or in the room.
Old and new, robust and vulnerable, transience and beauty, formal and informal, visible and invisible, that’s what her work is about.
